A small town on the way from Vancouver, Whistler is the direction of Squamish. Midst of the mountains, a large supermarket, a manageable industrial park and a stadium with 5,000 seats.
What Squamish so needs a stadium? For the lumberjack professionals! Darren R. Dean (36) is one of the best known Canadian lumberjack, he earns his money with "Lumberjack Shows."
And just as a show wants to offer Darren in the coming week the athletes in the Olympic village. Darren: "Our sport is not true Olympian, but perhaps that will do something. I would be delighted. Next week I will also show the first time Olympic athletes a taste of my sport. "
The lumberjack is a volunteer during the Games as an assistant at the athletes' village. "The stars are all very nice, but often very focused and concentrated on their competitions," says Darren. In his show he wants to loosen Magdalena Neuner and Co. a little bit and present the diversity of Canada.
"You know, in the summer about 5,000 visitors come specially to Squamish to visit our Lumberjack Festival. There's more going on in our nest than at the Olympics. "For Sunday-EXPRESS Darren gives an insight into his amazing art. Throwing axes, chain saws and felling trees-speed competition - he has mastered each tool to perfection.
"Strength is important, but more important is the right technology," he explains. For his competitions, he uses a souped-up chainsaw with 10 hp. "Not bad for such a small engine, right?" Grins Darren.
In the summer it is a large truck four months on tour, shows his skills at competitions across North America, he was already in China and Europe. But now it feels almost like an Olympic athlete, because being able to present the major winter stars his show makes him really proud.
